Water under the crisper drawers: the defrost drain
A few times a day, your Whirlpool melts frost off its cooling coil. That meltwater runs down a trough and through a small drain hole into a pan underneath the fridge, where it evaporates. If food debris or ice plugs that drain, the water backs up into the fresh-food compartment and collects under the crisper drawers. On bottom-freezer models, it can also freeze into a sheet on the freezer floor.
What you can do:
- Unplug the fridge and remove the crisper drawers.
- Find the drain opening (on many models at the back of the fresh-food compartment or behind the freezer's rear panel — the latter needs a technician).
- Flush it gently with warm water using a turkey baster, and use a flexible pipe cleaner to clear debris. Warm water, not boiling.
If the drain keeps freezing shut, the defrost system itself may be failing, or a drain heater or drain strap has come loose. That's a repair, not a cleaning.
Water on the floor: supply line, valve, filter or pan
Water supply line and inlet valve
If your fridge has an ice maker or water dispenser, a small line runs from the wall to a water inlet valve at the bottom rear of the fridge. Old plastic lines crack and compression fittings loosen, especially after the fridge is pulled out for cleaning. A slow drip under the fridge can go unnoticed for months — if you find a soft or stained floor, shut off the supply valve right away.
Water filter housing
A filter that isn't locked all the way in, an off-brand filter that doesn't quite fit, or a cracked filter head all leak. Remove the filter and reinstall it firmly; if the leak continues with a genuine filter, the housing likely needs replacing.
Drain pan
The pan under the fridge can be knocked out of position during a move or cleaning, or can crack with age. Then defrost water runs straight onto the floor.
Ice buildup in the freezer or ice maker
If water drips from the ice maker fill tube and freezes, you'll see a solid block of cubes in the bin or a sheet of ice on the freezer floor. The fill tube can freeze when the freezer is set too cold or the door doesn't seal, and a weak or dirty inlet valve can let water trickle in between fills. Level and seal: the overlooked causes
Whirlpool recommends that a refrigerator sit level side to side and slightly higher in front, so the doors swing closed on their own. A fridge that tilts forward can let doors drift open, which floods the cabinet with warm, humid air — more frost, more meltwater, more leaks. Check that the gaskets grip a dollar bill all the way around, too. In a dry Tri-Cities summer that may not sound like a moisture problem, but opening the door a hundred times on a hot day adds up.
