What We Fix

Ice Maker Problems We Fix Every Week

Mostly in-fridge modules β€” French-door, side-by-side and freezer-mounted units.

Common ice maker failures

  • No ice at all
  • Production slowed to a tray a day
  • Cubes small, hollow or misshapen
  • Fill line frozen solid
  • Water inlet valve not opening
  • Bin overfilling or ice clumping into a block
  • Dispenser jams and crushed-ice failures
  • Ice tastes or smells off

Nearly every ice maker we service in the Tri-Cities lives inside a refrigerator β€” the module in the freezer door of a French-door unit, or the classic arm-and-tray in a top-freezer. Standalone nugget-ice machines exist here and there, but the in-fridge module is the workhorse, and its failure points are wonderfully predictable: the water inlet valve stops opening, the fill tube freezes into a plug, the module motor gives up mid-cycle, or a clogged filter starves the whole system until the cubes come out hollow.

Water quality plays a role too. Columbia-basin water carries enough mineral and sediment load to scale up valves and slowly choke filters β€” we see it across the loop, and a bit more on well-supplied properties out toward West Richland and Benton City. Part of every ice maker visit is checking flow upstream of the module, because replacing a module that's being starved by a $30 valve fixes nothing for long.

Typical completed ice maker repairs run $149–$299 β€” modules, valves, fill-line thaws and dispenser faults included. If your refrigerator has other cooling symptoms alongside the dead ice maker, we handle both in one visit; see the refrigerator & freezer page for that side of the story.

FAQ

Ice Maker Questions, Answered

My ice maker just stopped. Is it dead, or could it be something simple?

Check two things before you call: that the wire arm or paddle isn't locked in the 'off' position, and that the water filter isn't overdue β€” a clogged filter is the single most common ice killer we see. If both check out, the valve, fill line or module needs a proper diagnosis.

Why are my cubes tiny and hollow?

Low water flow. The module isn't getting enough fill per cycle, so cubes freeze thin-walled and hollow. The culprit is usually a scaling inlet valve or a tired filter β€” Columbia-basin mineral load speeds both along. It's typically one of our least expensive repairs.

The fill line freezes over and over. Can that be fixed permanently?

Yes. A one-time freeze can be thawed, but repeat freezing means something upstream β€” a weak valve dribbling water, a low freezer temperature setting, or a poorly routed line. We correct the cause, not just the symptom, so you're not calling us back every month.

Is it worth repairing the ice maker on an older fridge?

Usually, because ice maker repairs are cheap relative to the fridge itself. A $180 module on a refrigerator with years left is easy math. If the fridge has bigger problems brewing, we'll tell you during the same diagnosis and let you decide with full information.

Do you service standalone or under-counter ice machines?

Our focus is the built-in units inside residential refrigerators β€” that's what fills Tri-Cities kitchens. If you have a standalone unit, describe it when you call; for some models we can help, and if it's outside our lane we'll say so before you spend a dime.

An ice maker is the thirstiest little machine in your kitchen β€” a single worn $30 valve upstream can mimic a full module failure.
