Most LG refrigerators that stop cooling have one of four problems: Display/Demo mode is on (the screen shows OF F), the condenser coils are packed with dust, ice has built up on the evaporator behind the freezer's back panel (often with Er FF or Er dH), or the compressor isn't running. Check the first two yourself; the last two need a technician.
Five checks before you call anyone
These take about ten minutes and solve a surprising number of "dead" LG fridges.
- Look for OF F on the display. That means Display (Demo) mode is on: lights and fans run, but the compressor doesn't. The button combination to turn it off varies by model — it's in your owner's manual, usually "hold two buttons for five seconds."
- Confirm the set points. LG recommends about 37°F for the fresh-food side and 0°F for the freezer. A bumped control panel or a child playing with buttons is more common than you'd think.
- Clean the condenser coils. On most LG models they're behind the bottom rear panel. Unplug the fridge, pull it out, and vacuum the dust. In the Tri-Cities, wind-blown shrub-steppe dust packs these coils far faster than in wetter climates.
- Listen at the back. A healthy LG with an inverter or linear compressor hums quietly and steadily. Silence for a long stretch while the fridge is warm, or a rapid click every few minutes, points to the compressor or its control circuit.
- Check the vents and the door seal. Overstuffed shelves blocking the air vents on the back wall, or a gasket that doesn't grip a dollar bill, will make one compartment run warm.
What the LG refrigerator error codes mean
If your model has a display, LG uses short codes to point at the failing system. These are the ones we see most in Tri-Cities kitchens:

Codes point to a system, not a guaranteed part. An Er FF can be a bad fan motor, but on LG French-door models it's more often a fan blade frozen in ice because the defrost cycle stopped working.
The most common causes, from easy to expensive
1. Evaporator frozen over (defrost failure)
This is the classic LG pattern: the freezer is still cold, the fresh-food side slowly warms, and you may notice ice on the freezer's back panel or water under the crisper drawers. A failed defrost heater, defrost sensor or drain-heater circuit lets frost choke the evaporator until no cold air can move. A manual defrost (unplug for 24–48 hours with the doors open) will bring it back temporarily, but the ice returns in days or weeks until the failed part is replaced.
2. Dirty coils or a failing condenser fan
The compressor rejects heat through the condenser. If dust blankets the coils or the condenser fan stops, the fridge runs constantly and still can't keep up — especially in a 100°F Tri-Cities July, and especially in a garage.
3. Evaporator fan motor
If the freezer fan doesn't spin, cold air never reaches the fresh-food compartment. You'll often hear the compressor running but feel no airflow from the vents inside.
4. Linear or inverter compressor problems
LG uses linear and inverter compressors in most of its refrigerators. When they fail, the fridge and freezer both go warm and the back of the unit is quiet or clicking. Before you replace the fridge, check your paperwork: LG has historically covered the compressor part itself for longer than the rest of the refrigerator, so the part may still be under warranty even when labor isn't.
5. Control board or sensors
A failing main board or temperature sensor can make the fridge cool erratically. We test these before replacing anything — boards are the most over-diagnosed part in refrigerator repair.

Fans, sensors, defrost heaters and coil cleaning are almost always worth doing, even on a fridge that's 10–12 years old. Compressor and sealed-system repairs are where the math changes.
