A GE washer that won't spin or drain is usually stopped by one of five things: the lid or door lock isn't confirming it's closed, the drain pump is clogged by a sock or small item, the drain hose is kinked or clogged, the load is unbalanced, or — on many GE top-loaders — the shifter/drive system has failed. Start with the lid lock and the drain hose; the rest usually needs a technician.
Why a GE washer refuses to spin
A washer won't spin a tub full of water. It has to drain first, and it has to know the lid or door is locked. That means "won't spin" and "won't drain" are usually the same problem seen from two sides. GE washers check three things before a spin: the lid/door lock is engaged, the water level has dropped, and the load isn't badly out of balance. Any one of those failing stops the spin.
Match the symptom to the likely cause
| What you notice | Most likely cause | DIY? |
|---|---|---|
| Water stays in the tub; you hear a hum but nothing drains | Drain pump jammed by a sock or small item | Sometimes |
| No hum, no drain, no spin | Lid lock not engaging, failed pump, or control problem | Check lid first |
| Lid-lock light flashes; washer stops before spin | Lid lock/switch assembly failure | No — part replacement |
| Drains fine, but motor hums and the basket won't turn | Shifter or drive components (common on GE top-loaders) | No |
| Spins slowly, clothes still very wet | Worn clutch/drive parts, or partial drain restriction | No |
| Stops spin and bangs or walks across the floor | Unbalanced load or worn suspension | Redistribute first |
What you can check yourself
- Redistribute the load. A single heavy towel, rug or pillow on one side is enough to make GE washers cancel the spin. Spread it out and run Drain & Spin.
- Test the lid lock. On top-loaders, close the lid firmly and listen for the lock click at the start of spin. If the lid-lock light flashes or you never hear it engage, the lock assembly is the likely failure.
- Look at the drain hose. Pull the washer out a few inches. A hose crushed against the wall or pushed too far down the standpipe will slow draining to a crawl. In unheated Tri-Cities garages, check for ice in the hose after a cold night.
- Clean the pump filter (front-loaders). Many GE front-load washers have an access panel at the bottom front with a pump filter. Unplug first and have towels ready.
- Reset the washer. Unplug it for a minute and try a Drain & Spin cycle. This clears a stuck control, not a failed part.
What a technician usually finds
Drain pump problems
The drain pump is a small motor with an impeller. A sock, a baby's sock, coins or a bra underwire can jam it. Sometimes clearing the obstruction is enough; if the impeller is broken or the motor is burned out, the pump gets replaced — a common, one-visit repair.
Lid lock / lid switch
GE top-loaders won't agitate at high speed or spin without a confirmed lid lock. The assembly takes a beating from lids that get slammed, and its failure is one of the most common GE washer calls we get.
Shifter and drive system (GE top-loaders)
Many GE top-load washers use a shifter assembly to switch between agitating and spinning. When it fails, the washer may drain normally but hum without turning the basket. It's a bigger repair than a pump or lid lock, but on a machine that's otherwise solid it's usually still worth doing.
Control board or wiring
Less common, but if the pump, lock and motor all test good, the control that tells them to run is next. We test before replacing — a board is the wrong part to guess on.
Is it worth fixing?
For a GE washer under about 10 years old, drain pumps, lid locks and suspension parts are almost always worth fixing. Shifter and drive repairs depend on the machine's age and overall condition — we'll tell you honestly if replacement makes more sense before any work starts.
Having a GE washer looked at locally
Bailing water out of a top-loader gets old fast. We service GE top-load and front-load machines in Kennewick, Pasco, Richland, West Richland and Benton City, and lid locks and pumps are usually fixed in one trip. You pay $89 to diagnose, nothing extra if you approve the repair, and the usual finished price sits somewhere from $159 to $329.

GE washer FAQ
Why won't my GE washer spin but it drains?
If the water drains but the basket won't turn, the lid lock may not be confirming, or — on many GE top-loaders — the shifter or drive components have failed. A humming motor with a still basket is a classic sign.
How do I force my GE washer to drain?
Select Drain & Spin (or Spin Only) and start it with the lid closed. If it still won't drain, unplug the washer, check the drain hose for kinks, and on front-loaders clean the pump filter at the bottom front.
What does a flashing lid lock light mean on a GE washer?
It means the washer is trying to lock the lid but can't confirm it. Make sure nothing is blocking the lid and close it firmly; if the light keeps flashing, the lid lock assembly usually needs replacing.
How much does it cost to fix a GE washer that won't spin?
In the Tri-Cities, most completed washer repairs run $159–$329 depending on the part. Drain pumps and lid locks are at the lower end; shifter and drive repairs sit higher. You get a flat quote before we start.
Can you fix my GE washer the same day in Kennewick?
Often, yes. We run daily loops through Kennewick, Pasco and Richland, and common GE washer parts like lid locks and drain pumps are usually on the truck.
